Ailments via the Alphabet – C – Cold Sores

Ailments via the Alphabet: C – Cold Sore. A very common infection but a very annoying one! They can be very painful – so what essential oils are useful for cold sores?

At the first ‘zingy’ sign of a cold sore, it is quite safe to dab a ‘spot’ of tea tree & lavender (tea tree & lavender have antiviral properties plus lavender is a pain reliever), you could repeat this every 2-3 hours during the first day.

Eucalyptus also has antiviral properties & also can soothe inflammation. Bergamot has antibiotic properties, Geranium because it ‘balances’ the skin between overly oily & overly dry – these 4 essential oils can aid in the healing of the cold.

A wee blend can be made with these e/oils (using a carrier oil, 2 drops of each in 20mls) which can be dabbed on a cold sore (as early as possible) & used 3-4 times a day until the cold sore is healed – used regularly, this can really assist speeding up the healing process!

  1. Thanks Gillian, we have also been having some issues with fungal infections (feet) with the warm wet weather – can this blend be used for that purpose also? Applied externally? Or used in a foot-soak?

  2. Oh definitely soak your feet in tea tree, lavender & eucalyptus (3 drops of each for adults, in a large bowl – 1 of each for the kiddlies) – you could use a too blend to ‘back it up’ – it should work fairly quickly on skin, but a lot longer on nails 😀
